I heard from [livejournal.com profile] jascott that "Into the Blue" was nominated for a [livejournal.com profile] fic_from_mars award.

My theory is that it's one of you, the folks that took the time to comment on the story, who was thoughtful enough to do this.

Thank you very much!

Here's hoping that the second half of the season will resurrect my muse!

I'm relatively new to the VM fic universe, and so I had missed your story. Thanks to the fic_from_mars nominations, I discovered it yesterday.

It is spectacular. I just finished rereading all of the chapters for a second time. This story is one of the best pieces of VM fic I have ever read. Period. I will vote for you in the FFM awards, and I'm saving this story into my memories.

Your dialogue is perfect and your characterization is spot on.

I can't really speak coherently about all the parts that I like, but I'll give it a shot:

You covered so well so many pieces of the post-LitB story that were never addressed in canon (either because of the Felix murder or just weren't shown.)
- Logan's inundation by the press, and his return to school with the paparazzi and student craziness
- Logan calling DK on his "standing idly by" while Logan tormented Veronica for a year

The webcam confrontation between Logan and Aaron was so powerful. Could be one of the most effective fanfic scenes I've read. Mesmerizing.

The part Lynn's TiVo played in saving Logan - by recording all of Aaron's liaisons as well as the V/L poolhouse scene was genius.

Plus the idea that we could all see naked!Logan in the National Enquirer is a yummy thought! *squees fangirlishly*

But your overall theme that instead of retreating further into asshattery in a nobody-cares-about-me-so-why-bother fashion, as Logan has in canon, but rather finding inner strength to control your own future, as Logan has in your story -- absolutely fantastic. I think a part of Veronica's current contempt for Logan in canon comes from the fact that she used her adversity as fuel to become stronger and push on, while Logan has done the opposite. Veronica hates that about him, I think.

And then you have to go and close the story out with a fantastic Say Anything quote.

*dies*

Awesome. Just awesome. Thanks for sharing this with us.

I can't tell you how wonderful it is to read such great feedback. It's really nice of you to take the time to tell me that you liked my story, but it's truly awesome of you to tell me why. Writing is definitely a labor of love, but it is a labor, and detailed feedback like this is really the best payment that you could possibly give a fic writer.

So, thank you very much, LDD!

As for the overall theme of the story, you're right, I did have Logan go in the opposite direction of what has been occurring in canon (although I do feel like Logan is making steps in the right direction of late), but I have an advantage over Logan in that I'm far older than he. I know that the only person who can possibly save Logan is Logan, and was curious to see if I could write a story where he made those kinds of decisions that lead to him saving himself.

Of course, Logan in this story also has a couple of advantages over Logan in canon -- for one thing, he has the trail of breadcrumbs to follow, and some proof that his mother once loved and valued him. In canon, RT keeps sweeping the table clean in front of Logan, stripping him of parents, home, most friends, the good opinion of the general populace, his girlfriend ... it's been really striking. If you're right, and Veronica's contempt (as you put it) for Logan this year is about her perception of his passivity, then she needs a reality check. She's still got Keith, a home, and the possibility of a free future in front of her -- as long as the FBI never catches up with her on those kidnapping charges. In fact, she was secure enough to risk her relationship with her father (arguably the center of the show) and her freedom to aid Duncan. As much as she rails at Logan that he takes unnecessary risks and is cavalier, her own actions show that she is not too far from him at all, although she has been far better at planning.

On the other hand, Logan has nothing left to risk except for his freedom and whatever fortune he has remaining to keep it, so if he feels that the deck is stacked against him, maybe it's because it is. However, the lesson Canon!Logan needs to learn is still the same one that every abused child has to learn: that he has to defend himself because he is worth defending. And that's a hard thing to do when your whole life has literally beaten the opposite lesson into you. Currently, I believe Logan is strong enough to defend himself, but resentful that he has to -- I think that like a lot of abused children, he'd like to be saved, just for once -- and I doubt he believes that he is worth defending. His fear of loss of freedom is what is driving him, but if that's the fuel that sparks his too-small sense of self-preservation into a flame, I'll take it.

Thanks again,

Anjou
